Nonslip solution for slatted floors

Unlike with standard concrete grooving, carbide tips cannot be used for slats since they would chip the edges. Fortunately, we have developed a specialist machine that uses diamond blades for precision groove cutting.

The advantages
of grate grooving

A non-slip solution that is cheaper and more effective than fitting a rubber mat or flame treatment. This is THE grooving solution for slats. The benefits :

  • Animals have as little disturbance as possible
  • The structure of the grooved slats retains its strength
  • The grooving is guaranteed for between 10 and 20 years

Technical
specifications

Diamond blades operating at 2500 RPM cut grooves 4 to 5 mm deep and 12 mm wide, spaced 27 mm apart.

Self-propelled machine is used to ensure a consistent finish. The machine’s weight is spread across 6 stub axles. We also have a compact, lighter machine for projects involving non-load-bearing slats.

Your questions
on slat grooving

Is there a risk involved in slat grooving?

Slat grooving involves the use of diamond blades, which saw the surface. There are no vibrations which could cause microcracks to develop in the concrete or cause pieces to come loose. The cut is clean with sharp edges. The grooves are between 4 and 5 mm deep, ensuring the metal slat reinforcing is not damaged. Our grooving technique has been approved by the majority of slat manufacturers.

How heavy is the grooving machine?

Our technicians always arrive with two machines:

  • a 3.5-tonne self-propelled machine on three axle trees, which will be used for the bulk of the work
  • a smaller 800 kg machine for non-load-bearing grates or tight spaces.

What does the grate grooving process involve?

We ask clients to prepare their slatted areas prior to our technician arriving.

If the corridors are wet, thorough scraping will be sufficient. There must be no dry or sticky residue on the surface of the concrete. Please make sure that you wet the concrete the night before if there is any dry muck on the surface, particularly during the summer. Ideally, corridors should be cleaned using a pressure washer.

When they arrive at the site, our technician will require access to a water tap. They will be equipped with connectors and pipes for hooking their machine up to the water supply.
Cleaning will not be necessary after the job is finished.

You will be given more details when you speak to our sales department.

Will I need to take my animals out while the grating is being grooved?

Not necessarily. Although ideally you should take your animals out, we work in both summer and winter, and in both occupied and unoccupied buildings. The machine is very noisy, but the sound produced is constant. Your animals will not be disturbed, even if they are close to the machine while it is running. For things to go smoothly, it is best to work corridor by corridor if there are animals in the building. With milking robots, our technician will plan the job with you in advance to make sure that your robots are out of action for as little time as possible.

How long will it take the technician to finish the job?

We work using high-performance machines capable of grooving between 60 and 80 m2 an hour. Our technician will factor in your constraints to limit the amount of disturbance caused during the job.

How much does grate grooving cost on average?

Slat grooving involves the use of diamond blades, making it more expensive than standard grooving. However, it is still a competitively priced solution to the problem of slippery floors – the cost is often less than that of losing one or two cows.
